Framingham-based LFB USA has broken ground on a $37 million new construction in Marlborough that will diversify the city’s biopharma base by bringing in drug manufacturing.
“They’re up there working and it’s really great to see new construction … we have seen a lot of renovations in the city,” said Marlborough Mayor Arthur Vigeant, who attended the groundbreaking Tuesday. “This will be a manufacturing plant for one of their drugs. We don’t have much of that in Marlborough.”
While many pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies such as Boston Scientific have a strong presence in the city, not much of the actual product manufacturing takes place there. This also represents a win for the region in that LFB USA kept a portion of the business located in the region. After an extensive search in Framingham, the company decided to locate this facility in Marlborough, Vigeant said.
The new 65,000-square-foot manufacturing and laboratory facility will be built on Crowley Drive in the Marlborough Gateway Business Park. LFB said it will add 50 jobs at the Marlborough site over the next 10 years. The drug ATryn will be produced at the facility.
