Three Central Massachusetts organizations have won grant money that will help boost the formation and development of small businesses.
The money is part of $700,000 being distributed by the Massachusetts Growth Capital Corporation (MGCC), which was established in 2010 to provide loans, lines of credit, guarantees, management assistance, and other services to eligible local small businesses.
Regional recipients of grants – which range from $20,000 to $65,000 – were the Worcester-based Martin Luther King Jr. Center, now run by the South Middlesex Opportunity Council; Twin Cities Community Development Corp. of Fitchburg with Greater Gardner Community Development Corp. and RCAP Solutions; and the Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce, based in Whitinsville.
Grants were also awarded to 21 other nonprofit organizations in the commonwealth. The grants are awarded to expand economic and entrepreneurial opportunity throughout the commonwealth.
Last year, MGCC said services from its g rant program helped preserve and create more than 800 jobs. In addition, 156 new businesses – or 17 percent of the 910 business clients served under the grant – were started, while 296 (33 percent) grew as a result of services provided by the grantees.
