Sartorius, a Germany-based life sciences company, is having a big impact on the local economy in Marlborough, as the firm is in the process of creating Sartorius North American Center for Bioprocess Solutions. When completed in 2025, this $100-million investment in the Central Massachusetts city will lead to the creation of 120 new jobs, as part of the company’s long-running operations in the MetroWest community.
Leading the charge for Sartorius in North America is Maurice Phelan. Responsible for the company’s 2,600 employees on the continent, Phelan is an important figure in the company’s rapid expansion. Beyond the Marlborough project, Sartorius is expanding its footprint with projects in Michigan and Puerto Rico.
Despite being a relative newcomer to Marlborough, he’s already having an impact at the local level, as Phelan this year was named a board member of the Marlborough Economic Development Corp., helping the city attract and retain companies with business-friendly tools. Before his current role, Phelan was already very familiar with the city and its players, as he previously led Marlborough operations for Sartorius and worked for GE HealthCare Technologies Inc., which was headquartered in Marlborough.
Phelan’s most challenging times as a leader came during the coronavirus pandemic. Seeing the desperate need for a COVID-19 vaccine, Sartorius quickly became a frontline fighter against the pandemic. Despite the many complexities of this chaotic time period, Sartorius rose to the challenge, providing critical technical consulting and supplies to some of the initial versions of the vaccine.
“My recommendation to any one in the pursuit of success is to make sure you have the right people around you,” he said. “It is important to be passionate about the work you are doing, but it is critical to surround yourself with individuals who share that passion.”
