Title: Assistant to the Town Manager, Town of Shrewsbury
Company location: Shrewsbury
Residence: Worcester
Favorite movie: “Cool Hand Luke”
Favorite book: “Slaughterhouse Five”
Career highlights: After teaching for seven years, I had the opportunity to pursue an interest in public policy, serving first as an intern in the mayor’s office in Worcester, then working in the city manager’s Executive Office of Economic and Neighborhood Development. In this capacity, I worked closely with community partners in the area of affordable housing development and led a revitalization initiative in several city neighborhoods. I now have the privilege of working for my hometown.
Community involvement: I served in the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, working as a resident advisor at a residential drug and alcohol treatment facility for adult men. This challenging year of service taught me valuable lessons about humility and perseverance. I have also served on the Off Street Parking Board for the city of Worcester and have been involved with local housing and homelessness initiatives.
Biggest success: My position in the town manager’s office involves working in areas including personnel, procurement and risk management, as well as on special projects. Most recently, I coordinated the development of the Central Massachusetts Veterans’ Services District with the towns of Grafton, Northborough and Westborough. This new regional district provides eligible veterans and their dependents with needed financial assistance within an efficient and flexible regional framework.
Biggest challenge: Witnessing the struggles of individuals during the economic downturn and working to improve their lives with limited available public funds was a significant challenge of my professional life.
Mentors: I am lucky to have had many mentors in my life. I have always appreciated the advice from people who love what they do for work and for their communities. I am grateful for the support of my parents and the encouragement from my wife, Laura.
Hidden talent: I make an excellent chili.
