Career highlights: I started my career at Rizzo Associates (now Tetra Tech Rizzo) in Framingham, where I was able to work on exciting, high-profile projects. In 2004, I decided to leave Rizzo and start my own engineering company, McCarty Engineering. Since that time we have designed and permitted over 50 projects in the Central Massachusetts area. Some of our designs are for Summit Eldercare, Ramsey Rehab, PT Plus, and Central Mass. Oral Surgery in Leominster, and Watkin Dental Associates in Fitchburg.
Community involvement: My community involvement started as a youth soccer coach. I really enjoyed working with the kids, making practice fun and teaching them the value of teamwork. In 2012, I was asked to join the board of directors of Habitat for Humanity of North Central Mass. I gladly accepted and have been serving on the board since. I have also joined Habitat’s Site Selection Committee. Also, for the past three years I have been a part of Mayor Mazzarella’s monthly meeting hosted by the chamber of commerce.
Biggest success and biggest challenge: The biggest challenge and biggest success that I have faced in my career is becoming a licensed professional engineer. The process started while I was in college (in 1998), then finished in December 2004. It was a long process that was very challenging at times, but it was all worth it on the day when the letter was in the mailbox stating that I had passed.
Mentors: My best mentors are my father, Daniel McCarty, and my uncle, Edward McCarty. My father started McCarty Associates in 1982 when I was four years old. He worked night and day building the business and taught me the value of hard work and determination. He also taught me the most important rule of business: Put your client’s interest first. My Uncle Eddy worked for my father in the site work division of the company. I worked with Eddy in high school and he taught me how to actually build the things that I would eventually be designing as a civil engineer. He taught me how to run every type of construction equipment and how to fix them when they broke down. Having this real-world experience of having personally built what we design has made me a better engineer.
Hidden talents: My limited comedic abilities. I am always the one being a clown trying to make people laugh. I am also pretty good at giving nicknames, pretty much everyone at Rizzo was given one.
