Title: Labor and Employment Attorney, Mirick O’Connell
Company location: Worcester
Residence: Holden
Favorite movie: “It’s a Wonderful Life”
Favorite book: “One Hundred Years of Solitude” by Gabriel García Márquez
Career highlights: After graduating from Villanova University School of Law and practicing law in Pennsylvania for almost two years, I joined Mirick O’Connell’s labor, employment and employee benefits department in January 2005. Since then, I have gained a wide variety of exposure representing employers in labor and employment-related matters, including negotiating collective bargaining agreements and handling labor arbitrations; defending against unfair labor practice charges before the National Labor Relations Board and the Massachusetts Department of Labor Relations; defending against claims of discrimination; enforcing non-competition and non-disclosure agreements; and providing legal advice on day-to-day labor and employment issues.
Community involvement: I am a member of the board of directors of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Mass/MetroWest Inc. In addition, I have also served as a member of the United Way’s Community Investment Committee, where I have assisted in reviewing grant applications from a whole host of social services agencies in the greater Worcester and MetroWest areas. I am also a former co-chair of the Worcester County Bar Association’s Labor and Employment Law Section.
Biggest success: My biggest success has been my family, including my wife, Marisa, and my two wonderful children, Trevor and Harper.
Biggest challenge: Like many people, I am in a constant search to find a work-life balance. Juggling my responsibilities as a father and husband with my responsibilities as an attorney has both challenged me and forced me to adapt to whatever changes (and curveballs) life may throw my way.
Mentors: I have learned from and been influenced by so many great mentors over the years that I would not be doing them justice by naming just a few. I have learned so many great lessons from my parents, my wife, my in-laws, various teachers and professors, close friends, and my colleagues at Mirick O’Connell. I am forever grateful for the wisdom and guidance each of them has provided to me.
Hidden talents: While I am not sure this qualifies as a talent, I have been told that I have a near-encyclopedic knowledge of the history of various forms of popular music, including rock, blues and soul.
