Having the title of president or CEO doesn’t make you a leader. A title is just words on a business card.
A true leader has a clear vision for the future. A leader not only has keen business acumen, but also strong communication skills. He or she also has to have passion and energy to inspire those within the organization to roll up their sleeves and get the job done.
The 2011 Business Leaders of the Year all share those characteristics. They are leaders in the purest form and we are honored to share their stories.
Our Big Business Leader of the Year, Greg Yurek, founded Devens-based American Superconductor back in 1987. Despite struggles and doubts about the company’s technology applications, Yurek persevered and now encourages young entrepreneurs to take the same risks when they believe in an idea.
Our Small Business Leader of the Year also translated a passion into a business. Ned LaFortune, president of Wachusett Brewing in Westminster, had a love for beer like many college students. But he and his friends took their interest one step further and created a business that is a source of pride for local residents.
Jim Donahue, our Nonprofit Business Leader of the Year, has an entrepreneurial past, having helped found a charter school in Rhode Island, but it has been his work turning around the ailing Old Sturbridge Village that earned him a profile in this issue. Donahue joined the nonprofit living history museum during some of its darkest days, but has managed to right the ship and rescue ailing attendance numbers.
Finally, we have our Corporate Citizen of the Year, Fallon Clinic of Worcester. As Jack Dutzar, president and CEO of the physicians’ group explains it, being part of the local community is a central part to the organization’s business strategy. And it shows in the myriad of ways the clinic and its employees are committed to doing good.
We’ve enjoyed getting to know our honorees this year and we hope you enjoy reading their stories.
