2011 40 Under Forty: Javani Preko-Anderson

SUPERVISOR, SAFE STEP PROGRAM, RCAP Solutions

Company location: Worcester

Residence: Worcester

Favorite movie: The original "Parent Trap" with Hayley Mills.

Age: 35

Career highlights: I have worked for more than 10 years in the community with at-risk youth and currently work in the field of domestic violence. In December 2011, I will graduate from Becker College with a bachelor’s in psychology and will begin the master’s in social work program at Boston University in the spring. My hopes are that the transitional program I oversee will eventually move into a clinical model so I can grow within RCAP Solutions.

Community involvement: I have worked with at-risk youth through advocacy, education, work-readiness, and independent life skills. I was a scout leader for the Girls Scouts for several years, and have been involved with my children’s school as a parent volunteer. I volunteer with the YWCA and Walk To End Violence and the All Saints Church.

Biggest success: My biggest success professionally has been watching the families that come into our shelter graduate and live successful, productive lives. They have managed to work on themselves and overcome the domestic violence they had endured for so many years.

Biggest challenge: The biggest challenge I face professionally is not being able to service every individual that comes into my office. In the field of domestic violence, there are more individuals that need assistance than there are services available to them.

Mentors: I have been fortunate to have many mentors throughout my life: My home visiting nurse Debbie Bourne Hammerle, my first supervisor Alexander Clarkson and my case manager Kathleen Whitham.

These three women gave me the tools and motivated me to become the woman I am today. All the things they preached and taught me along the way I have been able to use, learn from and become a better person because of it. These three women believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself.

Hidden talent: I started playing the violin in third grade and was part of the Worcester City Orchestra from middle school through high school. Today I play occasionally for fun.
