Marisa W. Higgins

Age: 31

Title: Attorney

Company: Fletcher, Tilton & Whipple PC

Company location: Worcester

Residence: Holden

College: College of the Holy Cross and Villanova University School of Law

Career highlights: I am an attorney at Fletcher, Tilton & Whipple PC. Upon graduation from law school, I served as a law clerk in the family division of the Montgomery County (Pennsylvania) Court of Common Pleas. During my clerkship, I was drawn to the fact that, unlike other areas of the law, family law is oftentimes driven as much by emotion as black letter law. After completing my judicial clerkship and practicing family law in Pennsylvania for a few years, I had the opportunity to return to Worcester and join Fletcher, Tilton & Whipple. I have never looked back.

Community involvement: I currently serve on the board of directors of Rainbow Child Development Center, a nonprofit child care agency in Worcester. I also participate in various pro bono programs in Worcester County. Volunteer work has been a great way to connect with the community and it is true that you get back from volunteering more than you put in.

Biggest professional success: There are no big or small successes in my practice. Every time I am able to help a client, I feel the same sense of satisfaction. Given the highly charged and stressful nature of family law, it is extremely rewarding to assist clients in getting through what many characterize as the most difficult experience of their lives.

Dream job: To own and operate an inn on Martha’s Vineyard.

Businessperson she admires most and why: Ian and Shep Murray, co-founders of Vineyard Vines. They left jobs in New York to start their now wildly successful apparel company. In the process, they manage to find a work-life balance that lets them spend much of the summer on Martha’s Vineyard and winter in Key Largo.

If you weren’t doing the job you’re doing now, what would you do? I have wanted to be a lawyer for as long as I can remember. I really can’t imagine doing anything else.
