2008 40 Under Forty: Robert A. Pontbriand

Robert A. Pontbriand

Age: 31

Title: Director of Economic Development and Government Affairs

Company: North Central Massachusetts Development Corp.

Company location: Fitchburg

Residence: Fitchburg

Career highlights:

I currently work as the director of economic development and government affairs for the North Central Massachusetts Development Corporation, a non-profit economic development corporation which specializes in economic development, industrial real estate and alternative lending, and staffs the North Central Massachusetts Economic Development Council (NCMEDC) which is composed of the 26-communities of North Central Massachusetts.

Prior to my current position, I served for six years as the chief of staff to the mayor of Fitchburg (2002-2008). I am a 1995 graduate of Fitchburg High School.

Community involvement:

Since high school, I have been very involved in the Fitchburg community. From 2002 to 2007 I was a member of the Fitchburg Civic Clean-Up Corps and an organizer of Fitchburg Civic Days. I currently serve as the president of the board of directors of the Fitchburg Historical Society and I serve on the Board of Trustees of Fitchburg State College.

Biggest professional success:

My biggest professional success has been to obtain my master’s degree from Harvard with honors while working full-time as the chief of staff to the mayor of Fitchburg. The experience taught me the value of hard work, organization, prioritization, sacrifice, and dedication.

Dream job:

I have a passion for debate, writing, and public policy. My ultimate dream job would be to serve in the United States Senate as a leader in public policy.

If you weren’t doing the job you’re doing now, what would you do?

I would probably be teaching government at the high school and/or college level. Teaching and the exchange of ideas is a passion of mine and if I was not involved with economic development that is what I would most likely be doing.

If you were stuck on a desert island what book would you want to have with you?

I would want “Robinson Crusoe” by Daniel Defoe. A favorite of mine since childhood, this literary classic has it all for the individual stuck on an island: adventure, survival, self-sufficiency, hope, and proof that one’s ability to think, problem solve and work hard are more valuable than any amount of money.
