2008 40 Under Forty: Dennis Braun

Dennis Braun

Age: 37

Title: Director of Graduate Studies and Continuing Education

Company: Anna Maria College

Company location: Worcester

Residence: Mendon

Career highlights:

I am responsible for enrollment of graduate and continuing education students as well as the new Worcester facility at Anna Maria College.

I have been working in higher education for more than 10 years (I guess you can say I am officially institutionalized) in admissions, I.T., teaching as well as athletics. I really enjoy helping students fulfill their educational endeavors as well as contributing to growing an institution.

Community involvement:

I have been volunteering my time with the Liberty Churches in Shrewsbury and Worcester, working in the children’s program. Also, during the Christmas season, I participate in the New England Dream Center’s amazing “Dreams and Wishes” program for underprivileged kids.

I also volunteer my time coaching soccer and baseball/softball for both my children’s sports teams. I enjoy giving my time to both my church and working with kids. I am rewarded knowing I have contributed in a small way to a child’s growth and enrichment.

Biggest professional success:

My biggest success professionally has been finding a career I truly enjoy doing. I am also proud to say successfully making a career change and reinventing my skills from IT to higher education after 9/11.

Dream job:

A general manager of a professional sports team.

Businessperson you admire most:

Jimmy Buffet. From a business standpoint, I admire the fact that he has such a unique niche market. He is extremely diverse in his portfolio of business entertainment, from music, to children’s books, restaurants, beverages, and now to the casino industry. Between his restaurants, album sales and tours, he earns an estimated $60-70 million dollars a year. Most importantly he has fun while doing it!

If you weren’t doing the job you’re doing now, what would you do?

I would either be an athletic director or start my own business.

Favorite movie:

“Star Wars” or “Indiana Jones.” I enjoy watching my son growing up watching the same movies I have. They stand the test of time.

If you were stuck on a desert island, what book would you want to have with you?

“How to Survive on a Desert Island!”
