200 physician Central Mass. acquisition by Steward under review

A state commission says it is working to measure potential costs, quality, and access impacts associated with Steward Health Care Network's proposed acquisition of a 200-physician independent practice association.

The Health Policy Commission is exploring Steward's plan to acquire the Central Massachusetts Independent Physician Association, which has offices in Springfield and Worcester County.

The HPC indicated Wednesday that it has received notices of material change associated with the transaction and said the parties expect the physicians "would increasingly participate in SHCN risk contracts and state that the transaction is expected to benefit Central Massachusetts patients by expanding access to community-based accountable care models."

It its filing with the HPC, Steward officials said the affiliation will increase consumer choices in the region and prevent the development of a dominant provider entity that could drive an increase in health care inflation."
