2 Slots Applicants Get Go-Ahead From State

Two of the four developers vying for the state's single slots license passed initial background checks and received approval from the Gaming Commission Thursday to continue with the licensing process.

Commission spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll said commissioners voted unanimously to allow Mass Gaming and Entertainment LLC (MGE), a subsidiary of Chicago-based Rush Street Gaming, and PPE Casino Resorts MA LLC, formed by Baltimore-based Cordish Cos., who both want to build a slots parlor in Central Massachusetts, to proceed to the second phase of the process.

MGE announced this week that it's working toward an agreement with Millbury to invest $200 million in a slots parlor that would likely be somewhere along Route 146. Millbury officials said they have been told by MGE that the project would create 400 full-time jobs.

MGE's announcement came about a month after talks with Worcester for a similar project fell through. MGE officials are expected to unveil a formal presentation to the town's Planning Board Monday night.

Meanwhile, Cordish, which initially made its $400,000 deposit to the state without naming a potential community to build its project in, is seeking to build a slots parlor with restaurants for $125 million in Leominster. City officials said Cordish has promised 500 to 700 new jobs with the development. Cordish also announced its Leominster plans this week after being shut out by selectmen in Boxborough, Danvers and Salisbury.

The commission expects to hold public hearings to determine whether to allow the other two slots applicants, Plainridge Racetrack and Raynham Park, move forward during the last week of July.

"With more than 300 qualifiers and 21,000 pages of documents, investigators continue to be steadfast in their efforts to complete the background investigations and meet the statutory requirements to determine an applicant's suitability as it pertains to finance and integrity," Driscoll said in a statement.
