$1M For Beetle Reforestation

The federal Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Forest Service have awarded $1 million to Central Massachusetts communities impacted by the Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB) infestation, Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray's office announced.

The state's Department of Conservation will use the money to replant approximately 2,000 trees that were destroyed in the effort to eradicate the invasive beetle. The money continues previous reforestation work that was completed using federal stimulus money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Under that program, area towns replanted 13,500 trees.

Approximately 32,000 trees have been destroyed under ALB eradication programs in Worcester, Shrewsbury, Holden, West Boylston, Boylston and Auburn. About 19,850 have since been replanted.
