11 officers disciplined for getting free alarm services

Eleven town police officers have been disciplined for getting free services from a New Canaan alarm company that had been the target of an embezzlement the department investigated last year.

Five New Canaan police officers have been suspended, and six were given written reprimands, according to Chief Edward Nadriczny.

None of the 11 officers played any role in the investigation of a $675,000 embezzlement from the New Canaan Alarm Co., the chief said Wednesday. But the service deals "created an appearance of impropriety," Nadriczny said.

The woman convicted of the thefts, Lisa Odierno, 40, of Norwalk, had sent an anonymous letter to the department in July outlining the deals the officers received.

Odierno's relatives claimed police may have overlooked a company executive's involvement in the theft because so many officers received free services.

But Nadriczny said the department's internal investigation proved the Odierno case was not tainted, because none of the detectives involved had deals with the company.

The alarm company's owner, Paul Chludzinski, offered to monitor the officers' alarm systems for free after installing them, the chief said.

Odierno is serving a two-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to first-degree larceny.
