101: Tips For Traveling With Technology

Business travel veterans are like sages, collecting tips and tricks over years of airline departures, arrivals and security checks. Technology, which is meant to make our lives easier, adds another element to the mix. Seasoned travelers all have words of wisdom regarding travel and technology. Here are three things to keep in mind for your next trip:

Don't leave connections to chance. Before you go, buy an international data plan for your mobile device as a security blanket, in case of spotty service. “Internet access can be great or it can be pathetic,” says David Lavenda in an article at FastCompany.com. “And having to pay $30 a day for an Internet connection in a $300-a-night hotel is not unusual." The plan may save you money and will ensure solid service. Check with your carrier or with an international telecom service before you go.

Extend yourself. Though it's 2013, hotel renovations aren't all caught up yet. Outlets can be great distances from places where travelers usually use their laptops, like sitting on the bed, for example. “I pack a long extension cord and adaptor in the appropriate voltage,” says a contributor to Journeywoman.com. “This way I don't have to crawl under furniture to get to the outlet that works best for me.”

Pack technology tools just once. If you're a frequent traveler, keep a bag with tech gear ready to go at all times in case of a last-minute trip. Buy and pack extra chargers and flash drives, for instance. “When it's time to go, grab fresh clothes, a laptop and everything else should be ready,” says an article at CarolRoth.com. This can easily shave off 15 minutes of packing and help reduce a little pre-trip stress.
