101: Office Safety

In busy days of work deadlines, project meetings and vendor presentations, we can forget about fundamentals, such as office safety. Whether it’s a slippery surface for walking or items stacked precariously atop a file cabinet, accidents can be a major factor in the health of your employees.

Here are some ways to ensure a safe workplace:

Create fire evacuation procedures. Fire can present a much higher risk of injury or death than it can in the home, due to the fact that workplaces are often more crowded. Evacuations are rife with danger as people are prone to making poor decisions as they rush to escape, says the website SafetyResource.org.

An evacuation plan should be set up, reviewed with employees and posted, along with exit signs for visitors.

Don’t eat at your workstation. Or more importantly, don’t drink.

It may save time, sure, but it can also create a potentially risky situation as water and electrical equipment don’t mix, says an article at WorkplaceSafetyTips.org.

“Accidents caused by water must be avoided at all cost,” the article says.

Keep an eye out. Monitor how your employees do their jobs and note if they are taking potentially unsafe shortcuts, advises an article by John Heaney, director of digital strategy at nationwide staffing firm Nesco Resource, at TheJobShopper.com.

He suggests also keeping on top of machinery maintenance and general changes in the workplace, such as new materials that could pose a potential hazard.

“Your staff changes, your machines age or are replaced with new machines, and your plant layout may even change,” Heaney notes. “Every change means your previous safety guidelines may not be sufficient anymore,” and should be reviewed, he says.
