101: Logos

You’ve got a great business idea and are ready to launch. But the prospect of developing a logo for your company is daunting. Have no fear. We’ve gathered the best advice from the web to help you pick the perfect image to represent your business.

Know what you want. There are actually three general types of logos, according to Entrepreneur.com. The most basic logo type is font-based (think of IBM or Microsoft logos). The second type uses an illustration to visualize what the company does. For example, a roofing company may use an image of a house.

And finally, there are logos that use abstract graphic symbols, such as the Nike swoosh. Depending on the type of business, you may want a specific type of logo.

Don’t get crazy. The blog JustCreativeDesign.com says that a good logo is a simple logo. “

A simple logo design allows for easy recognition and allows the logo to be versatile and memorable. Good logos feature something unexpected or unique without being overdrawn,” the author states.

A logo should also be memorable, versatile, timeless and appropriate.

Don’t be too literal. The experts at TheLogoFactory.com point out that some of the most memorable logos have illustrations that have nothing to do with the actual business.

“Think the McDonald’s Golden Arches. No hamburgers. Think the FedEx logo. No trucks or planes…While sometimes having a logo that portrays an element of the company is appropriate, it’s often better to have a corporate logo that’s graphically void of detail — a logo that can be adapted to whatever direction the company takes.”
