101: Interview questions

A great management habit to develop is to always seek new information and refresh your skills toolkit. Maybe it's some new software that will benefit your department. Maybe there's a more cost-effective way to ship products. Or maybe the interviewing questions you ask when you meet with potential job candidates have gotten a bit, shall we say, stale. Here are three interview questions you may want to add to your repertoire:

“What circumstance brings you here today?” Careerbuilder.com calls this one of the best opening interview questions ever, mainly because it surprises the interviewee. “If they do not respond quickly, just sit quietly and wait for the response,” the article states. This question can reveal issues with their current or past employer, interesting character traits or even insubordination problems.

“But enough about you. What about us?” This is how you can expose if a job candidate's heart is really in it — if he or she really wants the job. It's a better question than wrapping up an interview with, “So … any questions?” “Reversing roles communicates that the company seeks an open dialogue, and it helps you ascertain just how curious and knowledgeable a candidate is about your company,” says an article by Brian Libby at cbsnews.com. He suggests listening carefully to candidates' questions to determine how savvy they are about your company or industry — if they have done their homework. An alternate version of this question may be: “Where do you think the company should be in 10 years?”

“Describe an environment in which you would not thrive.” This is the question Larry Drebes, CEO of Portland, Ore.-based tech firm Janrain always asks, according to a BusinessWeek.com article by Arianne Cohen. “You see some on-the-spot introspection,” he said. “You can learn a remarkable amount about personality, as well as cultural and organizational impact.”
