As economic conditions slowly improve, many businesses are getting back on the hiring bandwagon. If your company is contemplating adding staff, here are some tips to make sure you bring the right people on board.
Be Honest. There’s a tendency, especially on the part of owners and startups, to over promise during the hiring process.
David Friend, a serial entrepreneur, tells Eileen P. Gunn of StartupJournal.com that company founders can be too good at selling a job.
“I’ve pushed too hard to convince someone to join me when they weren’t sure they had the temperament for a start-up,” Friend says. “It backfired, because from day one they were saying to themselves, ‘What have I done?’”
Use The Phone. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by a pool of strong résumés, don’t feel obligated to bring them all in for an interview. Instead, use phone interviews to narrow the list down to the top candidates.
But before you pick up the phone, do your homework, says author Eric Herrenkohl on Monster.com. He recommends creating a detailed profile for the type of person you are looking for. And he also suggests creating a list of “screening questions to weed out unqualified people.”
These screening questions can range from software expertise to general career background information.
Be Dynamic. It’s not enough to have a traditional interview with a candidate before you hire. To make sure you get a good fit”between employee and company culture, work in a variety of tests for top candidates, says Paul Spiegelman at Entrepreneur.com.
“Screen for a fit at multiple levels using behavioral-based questions, social get-togethers (e.g., a friendly lunch), and personality assessments to gain insight into how a candidate will handle a variety of professional situations,” he says.
What’s even more important, says Spiegelman, is that an employer never rush to hire.
“Even when your business is experiencing rapid growth, don’t let the pressure to hire quickly push you to employ the wrong person,” he says.
