101 Getting Organized

Office cleanup resolutions you can keep

You may think organizing is magic. In reality, getting organized and operating in an efficient manner is a skill that anyone can learn. Here are some key points to getting your business organized:

Set goals and look at why you want to change your current situation. What productive activities are the piles and chaos interfering with? Begin with a vision so you can define parameters for what should stay and go.

Look at your office space and create areas for each major activity. Store supplies in their proper activity area. This format makes finding homes for items very easy (i.e., supply corner has paper, pens, printed materials, etc.).

As you sort and purge ask the hard questions. Why am I keeping this? Is it necessary and does it add value to my work? Divide piles into keep, donate and trash. Focus on one corner at a time so you work methodically around the room. Organizing can be hard work so take a look at these quick tips and get started today:

1. Keep the source and recycle the paper.

The best way to tame paper is to keep as little as possible. Try to condense information.

2. Clean up your daily messes.

Come to a clean desk every morning so you can focus on the new day.

3. Label everything.

Unlabeled = Invisible

4. Be consistent.

Give individual papers and items the same home every time. Keep your most needed items closest

5. Make an index.

It is okay to cheat. Create a simple index to remember where to find your supplies and papers.
