101: 3 tips to avoid burnout from work

Feeling listless, uninspired, unmotivated? A lack of sleep — let's say if you're working on a big project, multitasking and dealing with a grueling corporate travel schedule — can be the perfect recipe for work burnout. But ironically, if you don't address it, your productivity will pay the price. Here are three ways to beat burnout and keep it from burning you:

Disconnect (but not too much). Completely shutting yourself off from every phone call, text or email could be counterproductive, says Stephen Steinberg at WeWork.com. But don't overreach, and pick just a few key things from your to-do list to tackle each day. “It's better to get a few things done early than to get more things done but still not reach your goals for that day. Set yourself up for success … it will do wonders for your mental recovery,” he writes.

Figure out how exceptional effort can advance you. “Making sure your boss stays apprised of your innovation and extra hours will pay dividends in future evaluations,” advises an article at Forbes.com. Be sure you document your hard work so you can update your resume. Plus, seeing a list of your accomplishments is a great mood lifter and a way to keep stress in perspective by showing the big picture.

Make your well-being a priority. Sleep always seems like something you can catch up on later. But rest, healthy meals and exercise must be factored in, no matter what your project deadlines look like. “It's so important not to fall into this trap,” writes Ali Brown at StartupNation.com, and, paired with pressure, could be a highway to a medical meltdown. “Hire a personal trainer or have healthfully prepared meals delivered to your office, if that's what it takes,” she says.
