Worcester County's seven-day average for coronavirus deaths has fallen into the single digits for the first time since April 20, continuing a promising downward trend for the region that had been slower to show improvement than much of the rest of the state.

Worcester County had 132 newly reported coronavirus-related cases over the weekend, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. That's a fraction of the level where the county peaked with 429 new cases in a single day reported on April 24.

On Monday, Worcester County stood at 823 total deaths and 11,732 cases, according to the state. Across Massachusetts, those tallies stood at 7,316 deaths and 103,436 cases. The 304 new cases reported statewide Sunday was the lowest daily increase since March 23.

The more encouraging numbers come as Massachusetts enters a new phase of business reopenings Monday, with many shops able to reopen, restaurants able to serve patrons in outdoor areas, and hotels allowed to reopen their rooms to guests.

Central Massachusetts hospitals are seeing slowing numbers of inpatient and intensive-care coronavirus patients.

UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester reported 80 inpatient cases Sunday, with 28 in the ICU. At Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester, those numbers were 28 and seven, respectively. MetroWest Medical Center's Framingham and Natick campuses had a combined 30 inpatient cases and five in intensive care. Marlborough Hospital had 19 inpatient cases and five in the ICU.

The state announced 19,238 new coronavirus tests conducted over the weekend. About 16% of the tests performed in Worcester County have yielded the patient is positive for coronavirus.

Nationally, cases stood Monday morning at more than 1.9 million, with more than 110,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. Worldwide, cases have surpassed 7 million cases and more than 400,000 deaths.
