10 Things I Know About... Selecting A Web Design Firm

10. Think Functionality

It’s not enough just to be able to design a good-looking site. A website needs to function well, too. That means programming and coding skills, not just good art direction.

9. Communication Skills

The ability to communicate clearly with clients is critical. You should be able to easily understand everything your designer says about your site. If they can only speak using technical jargon, then keep looking.

8. Seek Clarity

You should be able to understand exactly what you’re getting for your money once you receive a quote. Vague answers about potential costs are a major red flag.

7. A Marketing Mind

Most businesses expect their websites to help them conduct business. If your designer can’t understand or doesn’t seem interested in your marketing goals, your website won’t help you build your business.

6. SEO Skills

SEO — search engine optimization — is about making it easy for search engines to find your website. If the best possible ranking is important to you, your designer should understand SEO.

5. Put Visitors First

User experience refers to how easy and satisfying it is for someone to use a website. Your designer should understand this and strive to create the best possible user experience.

4. Get References

Any respectable, professional web designer should be happy to provide a list of satisfied clients. Check their LinkedIn recommendations as well.

3. Content Is Critical

Does your designer create the content for your site, or do you have to provide it? This key detail is often overlooked and can become a stumbling block.

2. Don’t Forget Hosting

Getting your site designed is only part of the process of establishing an online presence — your site needs to “live” somewhere. If your designer doesn’t provide hosting services, you’ll have to arrange that.

1. After The Launch

Maintenance makes a big difference. Your designer should be able to make it easy for you to maintain your site and keep it updated.
