10 Things I Know About ... Planning A Productive Week

Snow

10. BUILD MOMENTUM

Don't underestimate actions that can be completed in three to five minutes. They can generate a lot of momentum.

9. PLAN FOR BALANCE

Consider three types of roles you play in your busy life: individual (mind, body, spirit), personal (relationships, family, friends, hobbies, financial), and professional. Make progress in each.

8. PRIORITIZE

If you were to achieve one exciting outcome for each of your roles, what would you list?

7. SET GOALS

Focus more on action-oriented than deadline goals. You'll make much more progress if you create a goal to “Exercise aerobically for 30 minutes daily” than if you say you'll “lose 20 pounds by Dec. 31.”

6. TAKE ACCOUNT

Create daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly goal checklists and give yourself a score each checklist period. For example, if, in a week's daily goal checklist you achieved your goal five out of seven days, your score is 71 percent.

5. CAPTURE IDEAS

Devise a system to capture ideas related to your roles and projects as they arise during the week. Then, when you plan the following week, refer to your notes.

4. PREP GOOD QUESTIONS

Make a list of probing and inspiring questions for your roles and key people at the end of each week. For example: “What's the one talking point I can use to help prospective clients better connect with my product?”

3. PLAN AHEAD

A little bit of prep work can determine whether you accomplish a goal. If you have a brainstorming session planned for late in the week, gather resources at the start of the week.

2. BITE THE BULLET

Think in bullet points instead of prose for what you want to accomplish each day.

1. BREATHE

Breathe while you achieve! Cultivate the ability to slow down and experience your daily and weekly accomplishments. Two minutes of deep breathing three times a day will energize you, reduce stress and help you to be in the moment so you can enjoy your successes.
