10 Things I Know About ... Mastering public speaking

10. Fear is natural.
Even the best speakers get a bit of the jitters. A great presentation can leave long-lasting, positive effects on your business. On the flip side, a negative opinion formed after you speak can call into question whether you’re an expert in your field.

9. Rehearse until it looks spontaneous. You should know your presentation thoroughly without having to constantly refer to your notes. Tip: Moving away from the podium to make a point could make your delivery more dramatic

8. Beware of jokes that may offend. Rule: If you have to test a joke on someone prior to your event, the mere fact that you “tested” that joke shows you shouldn’t use it.  Audiences are sensitive to anything that may offend.

7. Know your audience.
Find out their current challenges or recent success. Make note of them in your presentation for added content.

6. Do your homework. Who spoke to this group last? Any newsworthy events that have a bearing on them? Try to weave it into your presentation.

5.  Do a sound check. If possible, make sure the sound system is working properly. A bad system can have a negative impact your message on the audience.

4.  Be careful with PowerPoint. Rule: No more than eight words per slide. Can the people in the back see your presentation?

3.  Don’t speak from the dark.
Often, the featured speaker is in an area with insufficient lighting. Work with organizers to have you lighted properly.

2. Dress a level above the crowd.
If the crowd is business casual, be business proper.  Don’t show up in a golf shirt and khakis if the audience is in full business attire.

1. End on time.
Regardless of how important your message is, most attendees have other things to do. You always want to be off the stage five minutes before they wonder when you’re getting off it.   n
