10. Call on colleges.
Career center professionals can offer you advice in developing internship programs and connecting with qualified students.
9. Verify credit eligibility.
Academic requirements vary, so it's up to the intern's college to determine if the internship is creditworthy.
8. Make it meaningful.
Refer to the internship guidelines provided by the U.S. Department of Labor and the National Association of Colleges and Employers for what constitutes a legitimate internship.
7. Give direction and supervision.
An internship is the first step in a professional career. Interns need supervisors who will set clear goals, discuss expectations and provide feedback.
6. Learning is a two-way street.
Internships are great opportunities for an employer to gain a student's perspective and develop management skills in high-potential employees who supervise interns.
5. Let them explore.
Great internships provide students with the opportunity to explore the world of work by participating in training, sitting in on meetings, completing meaningful work and networking with co-workers.
4. Company's preparation is key.
To make the internship a meaningful experience for everyone, plan a variety of projects and tasks that will cover the duration of the internship.
3. Help them for the long term.
When you hire an intern, consider the student's potential for long-term employment after graduation.
2. Post clear descriptions.
Clarity, accuracy and specificity help attract the right candidate to your internship.
1. Remember when YOU were young?
Everyone starts somewhere. Hosting an intern is a great way to share your functional and professional expertise with a student that can set them up for long-term success.
