10 Things I Know About.... Effective Leaders

10. Clear Vision

They have absolute clarity on where the business is heading, even if they’re not sure how and when they will get there. They truly believe in the vision.

9. Business Basics

They have sufficient knowledge of all disciplines to execute the vision, even though they were weaned in sales, finance or some other discipline. They know enough that you can’t fool them.

8. ‘Big Picture’ Viewers

They focus on what’s critical and allow others to manage the details by clearly understanding the key drivers and associated success indicators. They don’t micromanage.

7. People First

They know one of their primary roles is getting the best out of their people. Talent management, from recruitment to retirement, is one of their top priorities.

6. Quiet Determination

They work through adversity and understand that it’s a journey, not a destination. They expect challenges along the way and work through them with great resolve.

5. Emotional Intelligence

They understand that working with people is emotional and involves doing the appropriate thing, at the appropriate time, with the appropriate people. They demonstrate emotionally intelligent behavior.

4. Personal Humility

They possess an uncanny ability to downplay their own contributions and are more driven by supporting the growth and success of others.They genuinely care more about others and less about their own egos.

3. Goal Oriented

They’re on their own with few peers and many reports. It can be lonely but they have learned to become success-driven leaders through an inner drive to succeed. They’re determined and self-motivated.

2. Personal Health

In order to perform their best, they see their physical well-being as key to being sharp and alert. They exercise regularly.

1. Work-Life Balance

They ensure time for family because they can’t separate their personal and professional lives. Consequently, their families provide a reciprocal understanding for their work commitments. They make time for both.
