Running a construction site in the winter
By Jeff Navin
Project Executive for Consigli Construction Co. Inc. of Milford.
As told to Cory S. Hopkins, Worcester Business Journal Staff Writer.
10. KNOW YOUR GEOGRAPHY
The Eagle Hill School project in Hardwick has different weather patterns than a project at Bowdoin College in Maine.
9. PLAN AHEAD
Always have labor, materials and equipment onsite and available at all times.
8. BUDGET
Budget all winter tasks to determine exactly what will be needed to keep the job running through the winter months.
7. COMPLETE SITE WORK EARLY
Get as much work in the ground before the frost sets in. Once ground temperature drops, site work gets very expensive.
6. UNDERSTAND YOUR NEEDS
Heating for installation of metal studs and piping is very different than the heat and humidity required for millwork, paint and flooring.
5. GET ENCLOSED
Working under a roof and within the exterior walls provides permanent weather protection and creates a place to work while avoiding costly temporary conditions.
4. SELECT HEATING FUEL
Fuel is always changing prices, so know the market and select the best option for your project. Â
3. RESERVE EQUIPMENT
Rental equipment goes quick and is typically reserved in advance.
2. START EARLY
Daylight is short in the winter months, so start early to take advantage of the sunlight.
1. BE SAFE
Be aware of the signs of frost bite and hypothermia.
