10 Central Mass. communities receive $7M for housing, neighborhood aid

Nearly $7 million in state funding announced Tuesday will go toward neighborhood and housing improvements in 10 Central Massachusetts cities and towns.

Those funds are part of $34 million in funds the Baker Administration has doled out in Community Development Block Grants, funds originating with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. In all, 41 communities statewide were given funds.

Central Massachusetts recipients include:

  • Athol: $800,000 for infrastructure improvements to the Walnut Street neighborhood.
  • Gardner: $825,000 for downtown infrastructure improvements, park improvements along Park Street, and social service assistance for youth, substance abuse and domestic violence prevention services.
  • Leicester: $335,200 for housing rehabilitation assistance to seven units and design work for handicapped accessibility improvements to Russell Memorial Park.
  • Marlborough: $799,455 for housing rehabilitation assistance to 10 units, roof repairs to Liberty Hill public housing, infrastructure improvements to Harrison Place, and youth services.
  • Millbury and Dudley: $664,500 for housing rehabilitation assistance to 15 units, design work for infrastructure improvements in Millbury and design work for Millbury Senior Center improvements.
  • Northbridge: $800,000 to provide housing rehabilitation assistance to 14 units and planning to prepare an area-wide inventory of blighted properties.
  • Southbridge: $825,000 for West Street roadway improvements, McCann Field improvements and code enforcement.
  • Webster: $825,000 for Granite Street infrastructure improvements and downtown and Riverwalk improvements.
  • Winchendon: $715,510 for Railroad Street infrastructure improvements and to provide fuel assistance.
