Mass. Foreclosures Hit Three-Year High

The number of foreclosure deeds filed in Massachusetts doubled in March compared to the same month last year and increased by nearly 36 percent compared to February, according to The Warren Group , the Boston-based publisher of Banker & Tradesman.

In fact, the number of foreclosure deeds hit its highest level since 2005 in March, with 1,167 filed during the month. According to The Warren Group, 486 foreclosure deeds were filed in March 2007.

Nearly 3,000 homes were foreclosed during the first quarter, The Warren Group said.

Petitions to foreclose, the first step taken toward foreclosure, increased 33.3 percent in March compared to March of last year. In the first quarter, 8,968 petitions to foreclose were filed compared to 6,429 during the first quarter of 2007.
