American Superconductor Corp. an energy and power company based in Ayer, announced on Tuesday a partnership with Chicago electric utility Commonwealth Edison Co.

The partnership integrates AMSC’s Resilient Electric Grid system, which improves reliability and performance of electric power grids, into ComEd’s systems, according to a press release from AMSC.

AMSC’s REG system utilizes a wire reducing the impact of equipment failure when faced with aging, bad weather, or other threats to electric utilities services. Based on the performance of the REG system, ComEd may implement the technology in other northern Illinois communities, said the announcement.

The REG system project with ComEd used funding from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate, which aims to improve the U.S.’s electric grid in the face of catastrophic events.

AMSC was founded in 1987 and oversees operations in Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America.
