Robert Kilroy and Paul Carey will carry the torch held by former Mirick O’Connell Managing Partner David Surprenant for more than 20 years. In April, the duo took over as the first-ever co-managing partners of the 108-year-old firm, completing a leadership transition in the work for a year. Surprenant will continue with the firm as chairman.

Both attorneys have impressive track records with the firm and are regularly recognized by rating service Super Lawyers. They are part of a team of 63 attorneys, making Mirck the 31st largest law firm in the Bay State in 2023, according to Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly.

Before he was a lawyer, Kilroy was a U.S. Marine Corps officer, having earned an undergraduate degree from WPI. It was during a stint as an instructor in weapons and tactics for the U.S. Navy that Kilroy realized he might do well as a litigator as he often had to debate senior officers about how to deploy air defense tactics.

At Mirick O’Connell, which primarily serves businesses and their executives, Kilroy specializes in employment litigation in defense of corporations and their executives. He formerly chaired the firm’s labor, employment and employee benefits group and has served in various volunteer board positions, including a local hospital and chamber of commerce.

Carey is a partner in the firm’s creditor’s rights, bankruptcy and reorganization group and was included in the 2024 Best Lawyers in America edition for his work in those areas.

Outside the the Mirick offices, Carey serves on the boards of Cornerstone Bank and Community Legal Aid in Worcester, as well as the Upton Planning Board.
