Metamagnetics designs and produces radio frequency components used in defense and aerospace systems, focusing on maintaining reliable communications in environments with heavy signal interference.
The Marlborough company’s products are used in applications where multiple systems operate simultaneously, requiring precise filtering to prevent signal disruption. Its technology supports communication systems on platforms such as naval vessels and other defense equipment.
A key part of its product design is the use of yttrium iron garnet and gadolinium gallium garnet wafers, which the company produces in-house. Metamagnetics manufactures more than 300 wafers per year, including four-inch diameter wafers, a capability it says is unique in the U.S.
Those wafers are used to build filtering devices protecting drones and other systems from signal jamming.
This year, the company secured a contract expected to increase device production by more than 3,000% annually, a shift likely to drive hiring and expansion. Its products are designed without rare earth materials, reducing reliance on overseas supply chains.
