WuXi Biologics has fully resumed construction on its Worcester manufacturing facility and now expects the $300-million life sciences facility to be complete in 2028.
First announced in 2018, the project was originally set to open in 2024. In January 2024, WuXi Bio said it would expand the manufacturing capacity at the site to 36,000 liters, up from a planned 24,000 liters. At the time, the facility was expected to employ 250 people after it opened.
Construction at the site was paused in June 2024 but resumed in December of that year. WuXi Bio’s ability to operate in the U.S. had been potentially threatened by the BIOSECURE Act, which aims to place restrictions on foreign life science firms deemed to have close ties with governments considered adversarial to U.S. interests.
On Tuesday, a company spokesperson confirmed the new timeline for the project at 305 Belmont St., inside The Reactory life sciences campus first conceived by the Worcester Business Development Corp.
“We expect construction on our commercial manufacturing facility in Worcester to be complete in 2028,” said Elizabeth Steele, senior director of public and government affairs at WuXi Bio.
News of the project’s latest timeline update was first reported by Endpoints News.
WuXi Biologics is offering $5,000 for employees who are first-time home buyers and looking to move to Worcester, according to a report issued by City of Worcester Chief Development Officer Peter Dunn in 2025.
Construction of the facility is being led by The Cardinal Group USA, a firm based in Woburn.
Formed in 2010 as an affiliate of the WuXi AppTec group, the China-based firm is focused on contract research development and manufacturing for drug development. The company is now independently traded on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and has facilities in Asia, Europe, and the United States.
