WPI students awarded for magic mouse

Students from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, including one from Worcester, have won one of 10 invention awards given out by Popular Science magazine.

The students will be featured in the June issue of Popular Science.

The students, Christian Banker, Michael Cretella Jr. and Jeff DiMaria from Connecticut; Jamie Mitchell from Worcester and Jeffrey Tucker from New Hampshire, invented the MagicMouse.

All the students are seniors. The MagicMouse was invented as part of a senior project.

The MagicMouse allows computer users to manipulate items on a computer screen just by pointing at the monitor. The device uses receivers to track motion, and a tiny ultrasonic transmitter worn on the index finger like a ring.

Users can also zoom in on items on a computer screen by moving their hands closer to the monitor.

All the winning students are computer engineering majors.
