The head of a Worcester cannabis dispensary is authoring a book based on his own experiences with co-parenting and navigating the family court system.
Ulysses Youngblood, co-founder and president of Major Bloom, is working to release his book “Playing Your Position: Help Children Stay Whole” in April. Youngblood said the book is three years in the making, inspired by his own experiences after going through a divorce that involved a four-year, $400,000 custody battle involving his two sons.
“The book really is just centered around how conflict can be reduced if you really center the children,” Youngblood said. “I would say the subject is not covered that often, because who wants to talk about it, right?”
Youngblood opened Major Bloom in 2021 as one of the few Black-owned cannabis dispensaries in the country at that time.
Youngblood said the book will explore what happens when parents separate and the impact it has on children, as well as exploring ways children can be kept at the center while parents are separating and potential reforms of the family court system.
The book is being published with help from Manuscripts, a Washington D.C.-based firm that assists authors with writing and publishing books. The release will include both physical copies and an audiobook.
“Playing Your Position” is being published through a Manuscripts crowdfunding campaign launched on Monday. Youngblood said the scale of the book’s launch will depend on the campaign’s success.
Youngblood said he enjoyed the challenge of writing a book while running a business and tending to his children. He is exploring ideas for a second book.
