WBJ Talk Back from the April 11, 2011 issue

Hitting The Books
An op-ed from Peter Templeton, president of the Green Building Institute of Washington, D.C., on the popularity throughout Massachusetts of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and green building elicited this response from an online reader from Baltimore, Md.

“It will be interesting to see how LEED evolves and how states change their standards and expectations. Good to hear Massachusetts is handling it so well.”

Supply The Debate
In the wake of the Japanese nuclear disaster, we asked our readers at WBJournal.com and at our LinkedIn discussion group whether they think the benefits of nuclear power outweigh the benefits. Several readers offered comments, including these two:

“Gas explosions make the news. Coal mines kill at least 55 people in the United States every year… How many people died last year in the United States from atomic energy? What we need is a better energy policy that includes good engineering practices and diversity in the supply.”

“I do not feel comfortable with nuclear power as it is used today — the waste, the potential damage. In time, will it become safer? Maybe.”

In another LinkedIn discussion, we asked whether enough is being done to control the escalating cost of college education. Many of the responses were in keeping with the one excerpted below:

“Speaking as a parent with one in college and another going this fall my response is, NO! Unfortunately is seems any efforts to control costs usually come at the expense of the students with reduction of services or programs.”
