W. Brookfield station fined for failed clean-up

C&N Gas and Oil Inc. of Ware, operator of a gasoline station at 105 West Main Street in West Brookfield, kept a failing gasoline treatment system in the ground at the site, and has drawn a $5,600 fine from the state Department of Environmental Protection .

According to the department, DEP inspected C&N’s remedial treatment system, which is supposed to extract and filter gasoline compounds from soil and groudwater, in 2004 and 2005, and found that the system had failed. DEP found that C&N didn’t have a licensed site professional to oversee the cleanup for about eight months, and did not notify DEP when a new one was hired.

Now, C&N must come up with a new plan to clean up its site and pay DEP $4,500. The remaining $1,100 of the fine have been suspended by DEP, and the company won’t have to pay it if the clean-up plan is implemented and there are no violations at the West Brookfield station for two years.
