U.S. Retail Sales Rise 0.4%

Retail sales in January increased slightly across the United States, propped up by higher sales in electronics and appliances as well as restaurants. But sales of motor vehicles and automobile parts fell more than 1 percent since December.

Since January 2011, retail sales are up a healthy 5.8 percent over January 2011, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The year-over-year advances particularly cited 8-percent increases in sales at restaurants and among building material and garden equipment supply dealers.
