UMass Nurses Ratify New Contract

Registered nurses at UMass Memorial Medical Center and three other UMass Memorial Health Care units voted unanimously to ratify a new, two-year contract, according to the Massachusetts Nurses Association.

The union said the new contract does away with a proposal to cut nurse pay 10 percent.

Instead, nurses will get a 1-percent raise this year and a 1.5-percent raise next year. The deal also eliminates tenured steps from the nurse wage scale.

In addition to UMass Memorial, the contract affects nurses at the UMass Hahnemann, UMass Home Health and Hospice operations.

Contract negotiations began a year ago, took 201 negotiating sessions and involved a federal mediator, the union said.
