UMass Memorial Medical Center was ranked the sixth best hospital in Massachusetts and the best in Worcester in the U.S. News & World Report’s annual Best Hospitals list.
The hospital, the largest in Central Massachusetts, was designated as high performing in 18 procedures and conditions.
Saint Vincent Hospital was ranked second-best in Worcester and #13 in the state.
Two hospitals were tied for first place in Massachusetts: Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, both headquartered in Boston.
Last year, UMass Memorial was ranked fifth in the state. UMass Memorial Medical Center employs 9,771 people and includes 905 beds, according to the WBJ Research Department. It had $2.8 billion in revenue in 2025.
Across the various metrics contained in the hospital’s profile, UMass Memorial tracked on par with state and national data, particularly with patient experience. Overall satisfaction was rated at 87%, the same as the state average, and only one percentage point below the national average. Some 88% of those surveyed said they’d be willing to recommend UMass Memorial Medical Center, a percentage point higher than the national and state averages.
The only area where UMass Memorial was more than one percentage point deviated from state and national averages was in terms of patient satisfaction with noise volume. While 72% of patients were satisfied with the quietness of their hospital experience, the national average was 81% and the state average was 75%. Patient experience ratings were based on the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey, which is overseen by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
Saint Vincent did not perform as well as UMass Memorial Medical Center across many metrics, particularly in terms of patient experience. Some 79% said they were satisfied with the hospital, and 77% said they’d be willing to recommend it to others. Satisfaction with communication about medicine came in notably low at 66% compared to state and national averages of 77%. Noise was an issue for Saint Vincent, with 65% satisfied with the hospital’s overall volume.
Saint Vincent was rated as high-performing for nine procedures and conditions.
This year marks the 37th year U.S. News & World Report has conducted its annual study of best hospitals. It is intended to help patients and families make informed medical decisions.
