Unemployment in Massachusetts rose slightly in July, up 0.1 percent to 6.1 percent, according to the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development and U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
The increase comes as 1,600 jobs were added during the month, for a total of 3,249,300 jobs. Gains were posted in four of 10 private sectors: education and health services (4,000 jobs, or 0.6 percent); professional, scientific and business services (1,000 jobs, or 0.2 percent); construction (900 jobs, or 0.9 percent); and manufacturing (100 jobs, or zero percent.) The gain in durable goods outweighed the loss in nondurable goods.
The July gain follows a revised improvement of 600 jobs in June. The BLS originally reported a loss of 2,600 jobs during the month. According to the BLS, Massachusetts has added 37,500 jobs, year-to-date, and the unemployment rate is down 1.3 percentage points from the July 2011 rate of 7.4 percent.
Job losses came from leisure and hospitality (1,600 jobs or 0.5 percent); trade, transportation and utilizes (1,100, or 0.2 percent); and financial activities (1,000 jobs or 0.5 percent).
