State’s Jobless Rate Ends August At 8.8%

Preliminary figures from the state Office of Labor and Workforce Development show the state gained 2,100 jobs in August and ended the month with a jobless rate of 8.8 percent.

The labor office also said it had revised its July job gains estimate up to 15,200 from 13,200.

August was the seventh consecutive month of job gains in the state.

The private sector added 4,000 jobs in the leisure and hospitality, professional, scientific and business services and construction sectors while government shed 1,900 jobs, mostly in temporary Census positions.

The manufacturing sector lost 1,600 jobs. The trade, transportation and utilities sector lost 1,200.

August estimates show 3.2 million employed Massachusetts residents and 304,400 unemployed.
