The state Department of Public Utilities approved an agreement between power supplier Unitil and manufacturer Simonds International for a cogeneration plant at the company’s Fitchburg campus.
Simonds wants to install a $5.5-million cogeneration system at its Fitchburg headquarters, which it said would save the company 40 percent on annual energy costs. The DPU approved a plan for Unitil to sell Simonds natural gas at a rate specifically for the cogeneration plant.
The saw- and tool-making business hopes to have the system fully installed by October.
