Spectrum acquires NECN, Worcester news operations to remain unchanged

Spectrum News One in Worcester is being rebranded as Spectrum News NECN after the Connecticut-based business reached an agreement to buy the assets of New England Cable News.

The deal between Spectrum, NECN, and NBCUniversal expands Spectrum News’ local journalism to additional viewers in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont, according to a Feb. 11 press release from Spectrum.

“This agreement represents a significant milestone for Spectrum News as we grow our operation in New England and expand our viewership to additional markets across the country,” Mike Bair, executive vice president of Spectrum Networks, said in the press release.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

The acquisition will not impact Spectrum’s news operations in Worcester, which will remain open after the acquisition, said Maureen Huff, group vice president for corporate communications at Spectrum.

“We are fully committed to covering Worcester and will continue providing local news and weather from Worcester,” Huff wrote in an email to WBJ.

The combined network will be available to existing NECN distributors, Spectrum customers in Maine and Massachusetts, and Comcast Xfinity TV customers in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.
