The U.S. Senate passed a Department of Defense authorization bill that included the extension of the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program through 2010.
The program primarily helps small technology firms bring their products into commercial use through military contracts.
Massachusetts ranks second in the country in SBIR awards. Small firms received more than $240 million in contracts in 2005, according to U.S. Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass.
