Secret shopper scam Fitchburg Savings

Fitchburg Savings Bank says a “secret shopper scam” has put counterfeit “official checks” into circulation.

Unfortunately for the would-be counterfeiters, Fitchburg Savings Bank doesn’t issue official checks, but personal money orders.

The bank said consumers should be on the lookout for anything asking them to “cash this check,” “just wire the money,” “act right away” or “don’t tell anyone else about this opportunity.”

The bank said it had contacted the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. to report the counterfeit checks. The bank said the counterfeits look like real checks, and even have typical check insignias and routing numbers assigned to Fitchburg Savings.

But the counterfeits, instead of having “Personal Money Order” printed on them, have “Official Check” and other inaccurate printing on them.
