The Salvation Army of Fitchburg is beginning a $2-million fundraising campaign to help build a new Corps Community Center on its existing 1950s-era site on Water Street in Fitchburg.
The total project is expected to cost $5 million, the organization announced Friday. The Salvation Army Massachusetts Division and Territorial Headquarters have agreed to cover the remaining $3 million.
An anonymous $1-million gift has already been pledged, with gift matching for any other donation of $10,000 or more.
The new building will be 8,000 square feet and provide 50% more space than the current facility.
The Fitchburg Corps Center has served its region for 133 years, with the local Salvation Army outpost providing 30,000 meals and 2,000 grocery parcels in 2023. More than 5,000 people were served through its social services programs, the organization said. The expansion will help it meet demand.
The new facility will include a professional kitchen, larger food pantry, classrooms and community meeting space, a chapel, and other multipurpose areas.
