Research: Extreme Heat=Lost Productivity

If you think the recent heat wave made you less productive at the office, you’re in good company, according to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas.

Citing research from a student at Columbia’s sustainable development PhD program, the firm says even indoor workers become less productive during extreme temperatures. Even beyond the usual summer slowdown caused by vacations, Challenger says, high heat means less efficiency.

The firm suggests companies may want to take positive measures like relaxing dress codes, providing ice cream or letting workers shift to an earlier schedule so they can commute in the cooler morning hours.
